The Assam State Zoo cum Botanical Garden (popularly known as Guwahati Zoo) is the largest of its kind in the North East region and it is spread across 432 acre (175 hectare). The zoo is located within the Hengrabari Reserved Forest at Guwahati, India. The zoo is home to about 895 animals, birds and reptiles representing almost 113 species of animals and birds from around the world.
Forests of Assam have rich biodiversity of flora and fauna. It has a wide range of forests viz. Evergreen and Semi Evergreen forests, Mixed Deciduous forests, Sal forests, Riverine forests, Moist Savannah, Dry Savanna and Dry Miscellaneous type of forests. Managing these vast natural and life sustaining ecosystems is a herculean task in itself.
The State Government accords top most priority for the conservation of these diverse ecosystems while keeping the needs and aspirations of the people into consideration and remembering that we owe this for the future generations.
Assam has been a melting pot of various racial stocks, viz. Indo-Burmese, Mongoloid, Austro-Asiatic, Aryan, Dravidian etc. The state is inhabited by a large number of tribal groups; viz. the Boro-Kacharis, the Deori, the Misings, the Dimassas, the Karbis, the Lalungs, the Rabhas etc. Ahkhomiya or Assamese is the lingua- franca of Assam.The state has a reputation for warm hospitality. People are homely, charming and openhearted.The small and serene hilly villages shelter the lovely people, warm and fascinating and as colourful as the land itself. They robe themselves in the choicest cloths, which are blended on their tiny looms.
The total number of animals and birds, at the time of its inception was 42 (22 species) and 236 (31 species) respectively.
Over the years, the zoo grew and expanded to accommodate eye-catching exotic ones like chimpanzees, white rhinos & black rhinos, zebras, ostriches and giraffes from Africa; puma, jaguar and llama from South America and kangaroos from Australia.
